Noda Art Festival - NODAMODERN - Special Talk Event

Modernism Revisited – Architecture and Thoughts of Ren Suzuki –

Questioning Universality, Building Individuality.

With the thoughts of Le Corbusier, Prouvé, and Perriand in the background.

The building of BUNDLE GALLERY is a space that revitalizes a private residence designed in 1974 by Ren Suzuki (1926–2009), who worked in Le Corbusier's atelier in the 1950s.

Just as various landscapes exist in the natural world, this house creates an organic and modern beauty through variations in levels, skylights, and finishes.

The series of floors, the structure of H-beams, and the rhythm of light created by the top lights shape the experience of this place.

This space conveys the breath of 1970s modernism and is a precious place to experience the architectural thoughts of that time.

At this venue, we welcome architect and art historian Mr. Yoshiyuki Yamana (Professor of Architecture at Tokyo University of Science) to hold a talk event exploring the architecture and thoughts of Ren Suzuki.

The interviewer is editor and writer Mr. Yoshinao Yamada.

Mr. Yamana, who had a personal connection with Ren Suzuki while he was alive, has shown a deep interest in his architectural thoughts. In this talk event, we will trace the interactions and influences of Le Corbusier, Jean Prouvé, Charlotte Perriand, Kunio Maekawa, Junzo Sakakura, and Ren Suzuki, along with the historical context, and consider what traces of thoughts and construction methods can be found in this house.

Additionally, Mr. Yamana is currently researching Prouvé's initiative on “Wartime Prefabricated and Detachable Housing” and Sakakura’s wooden applications, to see how these ideas and techniques are breathing in Ren Suzuki's residence. This will be an opportunity to re-examine Suzukii’s position in the history of Japanese architecture along with the historical context.

We hope this event will serve as a chance for the younger generation, who may not be familiar with Ren Suzuki’s name, to experience the depth and charm of his thoughts and connect his legacy to the future.
