About "Avant-garde Art in Japan 1910-1970"

This exhibition, held at the Pompidou Center in Paris in late 1986, summarized avant-garde art from 1910 to 1970. Curated by the museum's chief curator, Germain Viatte, and Shūji Takashina as commissioners, it displayed over 700 works and materials, spanning visual arts, architecture, crafts, and design, across 3,600 square meters of exhibition space. From artworks by Tetsugorō Yorozu, Tarō Okamoto, the Mono-ha group, to industrial products, Shiro Kuramata's furniture, and traditional Japanese houses, Japanese art, culture, and history captivated audiences both in France and beyond, generating significant acclaim. Domestically, it led to a re-evaluation of Japanese contemporary art, cementing its status as a landmark exhibition from this perspective as well.
